Pitched roof designs usually incorporate a system of structural timber elements providing support to an underlay of sarking board, sarking felt, or breather membrane. Tiling battens are nailed over this directly to the structural elements, which provides support fixing points for a weather proof layer normally consisting of slate, clay or concrete tiles.
A pitched roof's primary function is to shed water from the property in poor weather conditions.  More recently, it has become an increasingly important consideration when designing for cost effective energy use.
Insulation for properties with a pitched roof has traditionally resulted in ‘cold pitched roof' where the insulation is at ceiling level, usually between the ceiling joists.  An alternative approach, the ‘warm pitched roof' is increasingly being used where the enclosed roof space is used as a habitable space. In this case, the insulation is installed between rafters in the slope of the roof.
